Continue reading »]]> The school “Particle-based Simulations for Hard and Soft Matter” will take place at the Institute for Computational Physics at the University of Stuttgart October 10th-14th, 2016. The school covers particle-based simulation and visualization software developed in the “SFB 716” research cluster of the German Science Foundation, namely

* Espresso (http://www.espressomd.org)
* Imd (http://imd.itap.physik.uni-stuttgart.de/)
* Pasimodo (http://www.itm.uni-stuttgart.de/research/pasimodo/pasimodo_en.php)
* Megamol (http://www.vis.uni-stuttgart.de/megamol/)

There will be both, lectures and hands-on tutorials. Regarding Espresso, the school is a great opportunity to get started with the software, learn about the underlying principles, and discuss development projects with other developers. Beginning with the next release of Espresso, Python will be the default interface language.

Therefore, this year’s Espresso-related lectures and tutorials will be based entirely on the Python interface of Espresso, so the school is also a good opportunity to get to know the new interface.

Detailed information about the school and about registration can be found here:

Highlights of this release include

  • Calculation of the electrokinetic equations via the ELECTROKINETICS feature,
  • The Shan/Chen method for multi component lattice Boltzmann fluids,
  • the P3M and MMM1D methods can now be computed on a GPU,
  • ESPResSo now has a rudimentary Python interface.

For a complete list of the changes in the release, please refer to the file NEWS. If you find a bug in the release, please report the bug here.

We recommend all users of ESPResSo to update to the new release as soon as possible. With the release of 3.3.0, we will not provide further updates to the ESPResSo 3.3 branch.

During the last year, we have on the one hand removed a bit of cruft from the old code, but on the other hand, a number of interesting new features have been added to the software. Here we name just the major features:

  • An immersed boundary code allows to simulate extended flexible objects in a LB fluid.
  • The feature CATALYTIC_REACTIONS models a simple chemical reaction: when a particle of the reactant type comes into the vincinity of a particle of the catalysator type, the reactant is transformed into a particle of the product type.
  • The feature GHMC implements a generalized hybrid Monte-Carlo thermostat.
  • The feature GRANDCANONCIAL provides functions for grandcanonical simulations.
  • When using ROTATION_PER_PARTICLE, it is possible to turn on or off rotational degrees of freedom for the different particles.

For a complete list of the changes in the release, please refer to the file NEWS. If you find a bug in the release, please report the bug here.

We recommend all users of ESPResSo to update to the new release as soon as possible. With the release of 3.2.0, we will not provide further updates to the ESPResSo 3.1 branch.
